CHAPTER SEVEN

THAT next morning, Tracy rushed to the kitchen at eleven-thirty, so upset for sleeping late that she was on the verge of panicky tears. It was bad enough that Ty had ordered her to do her own cooking from now on, she’d missed breakfast and was running late on the start for lunch.

And on top of everything, she had to face him. Oh God, why hadn’t she just packed her things and gone back to San Antonio? She’d actually got her suitcases from the closet before she’d felt guilty and put them back.

Now her dread of what he’d say made the idea of a cowardly escape seem almost noble. Surely this was the end, when Ty would glare hatefully at her and order her to leave and never let him see her face again. She had to force herself to take those last few steps to the kitchen.

She walked into the room, then abruptly stopped when she saw Ty standing at the island counter in the work area of the vast kitchen. He was leaning over an open cookbook, his forearms propped on the counter. He didn’t look up right away and it gave her a few seconds to brace herself for the awful scene she believed would come next.

Ty’s voice was low and mild as he casually paged through the cookbook. “How do you know what this stuff’s supposed to look like when they don’t have pictures of the finished food?”

Tracy stood rigidly, still braced for a blowup. His mildness sharpened her apprehension. Would he lure her into a false sense of calm then spring a harsh dressing-down on her to make it more traumatizing?

“I overslept,” she said, her voice so raw with nerves that it was barely audible. “I’m sorry.”

Ty continued to glance through the cookbook. “You were upset last night, Trace. It was probably better for you to get the extra rest.”

He was so mellow. And he appeared more intent on the cookbook than he was on her. Tracy moved cautiously closer to the island counter and said, “If you don’t mind having lunch a bit later, I can get it started now.”

Ty straightened to his full height and she froze inches from the counter. Surely the blowup would come now. He’d never seemed as big and threatening as he did now and Tracy quailed inwardly.

“Are you gonna jump out of your skin if I look at you?” he asked quietly.

The calm question threw her and Tracy stared, her brain scrambling to understand this.

“Not if you only look,” she dared shakily. “If you say some—” She cut herself off as he glanced her way and his gaze caught hers. She finished lamely with, “I can’t promise.”

Ty’s gaze was steady and intense, but there was no hint of temper or harshness. And he was so handsome, his bright hair the only hint of boyishness over a stern face and a body as hard and masculine as any she’d ever seen.

“About last night,” he said gravely. “I should
